BENEFITING: FENCING IN THE SCHOOLS INC
EVENT DATE: May 19, 2016
Fencing In The Schools (FITS) is a non-profit organization committed to bring the sport of fencing to thousands of kids all over the country, no matter what the financial condition of their schools. FITS was founded by Tim Morehouse, Olympic silver medalist (Beijing, 2008) and is supported by Olympic fencers from the US Team.
Why fencing? I've been practicing the sport of fencing for more than 3 years and besides the great physical conditioning it provides, it's a sport that develops your mind as well. Kids who fence learn the importance of persistance, effort and hard work, they learn to fight when faced with difficulties. Kids who fence are highly motivated to achieve their very best. These lessons (and more) drive them to be successful in school, to love to learn and to put their best effort in anything else they do in their personal life.
FITS programs start with an event led by an Olympic fencer. These athletes-ambassadors come to kids schools and speak about what they learned with the sport of fencing. Their message is encouraging and inspiring.
Their mission is to "Turn On The Light" for students across the country and help them become engaged, active, confident adults who can set goals and exceed them, lead a team, and have a positive impact on the world.
By supporting FITS, you can also help to Turn On The Light and:
Send Olympian Dagmara Wozniak, Olympian Jeff Spear and other athlete-ambassadors to schools
Scholarships for low-income schools through Direct Funding for Programs
Provide safe equipment such as masks, jackets and foils to schools
Train Coaches: Training for coaches includes teaching fencing skills as and relaying lessons on character development
Create Curriculum and Instructional Materials: In order for the knowledge of fencing to grow, we must have exemplary resources.
FITS introduced 15,000 children to fencing, and we need your help to reach the thousands more who can benefit from the sport.
"We, the fencing community, know fencing has the potential to shape bright futures for children from the whole spectrum of communities and backgrounds.
Help us Turn on the Light for our future world leaders, CEOs, and social justice pioneers, for whom fencing will be the first step towards success." Tim Morehouse, founder, FITS and Olympic silver medalist (Beijing, 2008)
