Isabella Bird Community School Garden - Cold Frames
Organized by: Nicki Peterson
The Isabella Bird Community School Garden is entirely volunteer and donor driven. DPS gave us the boxes, dirt and water, but the rest is up to us. The garden is like an outdoor lab for our students, and is a valuable part of our community. We want it to thrive!
Cold frames are mini greenhouses for our raised beds. They help keep out the cold and wind while letting in the light, and extend the growing season on each end. Longer growing season means more student participation, and more of a greater variety of goods that the garden can sell to the school kitchen.
Cost to build is $150 apiece. The remaining funds will be used to buy seeds, mulch, soil amendments, containers, and other supplies to get the spring cold frame season going. Between increased student participation and harvest, the cold frames will easily pay for themselves in the first season.
We'll also need volunteers to spend a morning building the cold frames. If you're interested, contact Nicki.
