It’s great for the kids, most of whom can’t walk without assistance, to feel the freedom of skating.  See more

THE STORY:

The adaptive skating program was established in November 2009 so that children with physical disabilities could enjoy recreational ice skating. Part of the physically challenged sports programs at Kennedy Krieger Institute, I-Skate provides these children a unique opportunity to get involved with physical activity, which improves their health, as well as a chance for important social interaction with their peers. It also helps participants learn an activity they can enjoy for the rest of their lives.

The program runs late fall through early spring, and over the course of those four or five months, the participants work on developing their skating skills. At the end of the program, the kids showcase their hard work with a show for friends and family.

WHO CAN PARTICIPATE:

Dorothy Hamill's I-Skate program is open to children ages 5 to 18. Their diagnoses and physical challenges can include:

  • Cerebral palsy
  • Spina bifida
  • Muscular dystrophy
  • Cancer survivors
  • Amputated limbs
  • Paralysis

Participants range from children who may eventually become independent skaters to those who may always use a walker for support. Currently, the program can serve up 30 children, but hopes to receive the funding to expand further.

DOROTHY'S I-SKATE WISH LIST:

$10,000:  A full season of ice time at the rink: This would fund twenty one-hour sessions of I-Skate.

$1,000:  End of season performance:  Our kids put on a show for friends and family at the end of the season. They skate to a specially choreographed program that highlights their accomplishments and their teamwork. Each child receives a certificate and medal for their participation.

$500:  One session of ice time at the ice rink.

$500:  Ice walker:  Many of our kids are not able to walk without the aid of a walker.  We need numerous sizes of pediatric walkers to accommodate all of our kids on the ice.

$250:  Orthodic ice skates:  Most of our kids need skates that have room to accommodate their orthodics. These are specially designed skates that make it much easier for the kids in the program to skate.
