THE STORY:

Island Rover Institute demonstrates the concepts of industrial conservation: reduce, reuse, refurbish, reutilize, remanufacture, and recycle as a means to educate youth on the principles of resource conservation and waste mitigation.  At this moment the institute is working diligently to complete construction of its name sake vessel Island Rover to serve as a platform for youth education at sea.  The ship stands as a monument to these conservation ethics and in constructing the vessel as an educational platform the institute will provide a way for youth to not only learn but live these principles.

Having been strategically constructed from surplus naval shipbuilding materials Island Rover is a tangible example of how these principles can be put into action. Through operating education under sail programs she will empower our youth and open doors to both continuing education and industry career opportunities.  In revitalizing the shipbuilding legacy of Freeport and drawing inspiration from the generations of seafarers who have sailed the world’s oceans from these shores, the implication that the launching of this ship has on the blending of maritime heritage and the modern principles of sustainability and conservation is monumental.

Through emphasizing the principles of mitigating waste and recycling materials, along with the generosity of donors and volunteers, the ship has been constructed along a fiscally responsible model and designed for efficient maintenance and operation.

In order to effectively delineate important stages in the construction of the vessel, plans have been developed to have four distinct phases.  Each phase will build on the last and is meant to allow for comprehensive planning and strategic fundraising throughout.   With our immediate need for Phase 1 capital fundraising to finish hull construction, apply coatings to the vessel, and achieve a successful launch.

We have worked diligently to generate a transparent budget and plan of action for completing this phase in a timely and economic manor.  Greater details and a comprehensive overview of all four phases are available on our website.

With this $10,000 CrowdRise campaign we ask you to join the community of contributors to this mission.  We are simultaneously working to strategically coordinate the generosity of additional supporters, cultivate grant opportunities, and find sponsorship to meet our total Phase 1 goal of $250,000.

At this pivotal moment Island Rover needs decisive generosity.  At whatever level you are capable of donating, every dollar will put us closer to a successful launch, and put us closer to having the opportunity to set sail with a full complement of eager and enthusiastic youth.
