BENEFITING: Operation International

Team Michigan is led by Dr. Mehul Mehta—a Hand, Plastic, and Reconstructive Surgeon who specializes in the treatment of birth defects and injuries in children. On each trip, Dr. Mehta leads a dozen or more surgeons, doctors, nurses and students who contribute to the clinic work and off-site village efforts.
On the last trip to Kenya, Team Michigan brought 61 crates of surgical supplies, operated on 45 patients and treated over 500 adults and children for everything from cleft lip repairs to burn treatments to hernia repairs and the removal of tumors. The team also delivered toys, sandals, crayons and coloring books to children in villages in the area.
ISMS teams face any number of challenges on these trips. For example, the hospital in Kakamega, Kenya, where Team Michigan worked in 2013, is the only medical facility available to help an area populated by over 4 million people. Only two and a half rooms were accessible to the Michigan team and there were power outages in the operating room every day. Despite these obstacles and numerous others, ISMS Team Michigan prepares to return to Kenya. Best of all, the support of private donors, local businesses and other charities help make this life-changing work happen.
