Ithaca 10K A Day Fun Run
EVENT DATE: Jun 11, 2017
Each day the average young woman in Malawi walks 10k (6.2 miles) just to get to school. She usually travels this journey after waking up before dawn to fetch water, cook breakfast on an open flame, and do numerous other household chores. To honor the determination of these young women, we will be walking in solidarity with them on June 11th. Join US! on the Black Diamond Trail at 8 am, and please consider making a gift to support these girls’ education.
Our goal? $5,000 to provide scholarships for SIX girls to attend high school for one year.
What's included? Each scholarship includes tuition, school supplies, a bicycle to transport girls to and from school and one year of mentoring and leadership programming.
More about Malawi and AGE Africa:
In Malawi, less than 6% of women finish high school—but 90% of AGE Africa’s students finish all four years.
Malawi has one of the highest child marriage rates in the world (near 50%) but less than 3% of AGE Africa’s students marry or bear children before the age of 18.
AGE Africa currently supports:
Scholarships for 221 impoverished Malawian girls to attend public high schools
After school programming for 1,600 young women annually in leadership, self-advocacy and sexual and reproductive health education.
AGE Africa’s programs are led and developed by a talented Malawian team, and we work closely with the Malawi government and Malawi Ministry of Education to make sure our model for change is sustainable and supported by our in-country partners.
