It's Bambi's Joint Account
Organized by: Bambi Downs
In 1989, I opened a joint investment account with my (now ex-) husband, Alex. When he left me and my two boys in 2005, it was strange to see that only his name was on this account, which held hundreds of thousands of dollars. Through a Sewanee friend, I was put in touch with an awesome lawyer who has done just as much as he can to help me with this case, pro bono. This lawyer has seen the original documents opening the account, with signatures by both parties. He has also written and held telephone appointments with both the investment company and my ex-husband. Both parties refuse to cooperate in this case of obvious conversion of my joint account to his single account, and will provide no explanation or documentation showing I signed off of the account (which of course I didn't). This good and ethical lawyer can do nothing more to recover my account without filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission to show fraud. This is an $8,000 fee -- hence the amount of the fundraiser. I have tried to do much of this on my own over the years, but through the genuine concern, compassion, and professionalism of the current lawyer working pro bono, more has been done than I could ever have done alone. Those who know me know that I am a fighter and a fierce advocate for my children. What has been done here is so very wrong, and so very obviously wrong (we have the paperwork with joint signatures, for God's sake!). By recovering my funds, I hope to be able to live above the poverty line, and help my two sons, of whom I was given full custody. They -- and I -- have never given up on trying to make our lives successful, despite losing everything. Any amount will help us toward our goal. Thanks for reading, and thanks for helping!
