I ran into one of the teens in my mentoring program today. He was upset because he was in an altercation and could no longer attend his favorite class. The school was placing him on restrictions and his mom didn't want him to come home so he could reflect on his actions. He wanted to see his mentor ASAP and be able to sit down and talk and let out his frustrations and vent. I told him we'd be doing something fun on Monday, maybe having Chinese food or going to the movies. His mood immediately changed. He smiled and joked and told me he wanted to do Paintball, or go to a music studio.
This mentoring program does alot of good. It provides teens with emotional and behavioral challenges an opportunity to talk to a role model, a mature friend. It provides other teens with an opportunity to establish a rapport with someone who will care for them when they might not have family resources to turn to. It provides us, the mentors, with an opportunity to be a friend, a role model, an inspiration, a helping hand, an attentive ear.
It's hard to take our mentees out for chinese food, paintball, the movies, when the funds aren't readily available. For my 33rd birthday, in lieu of presents or a drink at a bar, please consider donating (anything will do) to our mentoring program in order to help fund these educational and recreational trips with these teens so we can be sure to be a resource and a friend to them. Anybody who donates will receive a handwritten thank you note from me which they can then frame and place in their living room, rearview mirror, or wallet (it will one day be worth alot of money). Anybody who donates more than $20.00 will also receive a handmade note/drawing from Gabriela! Come on guys, let's put that little girl to work!!!!
