I'm volunteering abroad for 4-6 weeks in Cuzco, Peru as a medical volunteer (hopefully at a children's clinic). I'm trying to raise money to bring with me to buy medication, toys, etc for the children.
Below is a direct insert from my volunteer packet:
For all programs, it is imperative to remember that any money raised to help your project when you arrive in Peru will be very well received. Often it is hard for volunteers to take too many supplies due to limitations on baggage weight but remember that Peru has some very developed shopping centers where supplies can be bought once you have arrived in the country. This is our recommended and preferred way to contribute to the program. Not only does it mean you do not have to cart the supplies on the plane with you, it means any money you spend will be invested back into the Peruvian economy.
Below we have listed some supplies that are very helpful on the teaching and orphanage programs. Medical supplies are also appreciated and our local staff will always find a use for them at local clinics and hospitals.
- Vitamins/Calcium tablets
- Antibiotics, antiseptics
- Medical family guides
- Any books and/or research on health care relevant to Peru
- First aid materials\
- Children’s clothing
- Bubble Solution
- Music player and some children's music
- Musical instruments
- Stickers, stamps and certificates
- Group games such as bingo, snakes and ladders, twister etc.
- Coloured drawing paper
- Books (any type)
- Coloured pavement chalk
International Volunteer Headquarters
A little bit about IVHQ.....
International Volunteer HQ (IVHQ) aims to provide volunteer travellers with quality, flexible, safe and highly affordable volunteering placements in developing countries. In addition to providing aid and assistance to these countries, IVHQ endeavors to increase education and heighten awareness through not only the skills and expertise taken by volunteers to their host communities and institutions, but also through the experiences and lessons volunteers will in turn take back to their own countries and cultures.
