BENEFITING: MEDIA DONE RESPONSIBLY
I've led workshops on healthy relationship behavior for teens at risk of entering the juvenile justice system. One workshop forever changed me. I role-played a young woman who refused a man’s advances and was ultimately raped. In the feedback portion of the workshop, only one person in the group identified the act against the woman as rape. The other teen girls thought that by her being alone with the young man, she was obligated to give in to his advances. They sat in stunned silence as I taught them that they don’t have to have sex when a man asks for or demands it. They have power and authority over their bodies and choices.
Today, through Media Done Responsibly, I continue this work of helping youth understand their power by training them to navigate the media messages that normalize rape culture, racial stereotypes, and violence. MDR is a mentor and leadership development program. It trains student innovators to be conscious consumers, creators and advocates of media that reflects their full humanity.
Because of our donors, we have trained 250+ mentors in the past 3 years and they've provided over 1900 volunteer hours. We impacted 5000 youth in Los Angeles County resulting in a 100% reduction in cyber bullying, and 100% increase in media literacy awareness for participants.
Our goal is to increase the resources we provide to local schools in order to impact 10,000 new youth in the next 5 years. Your tax-deductible donation to our program will help us reach this goal!
