THE STORY:

Katya Belitskiy wrote -

Help Timothy hear his mother’s lullaby! Only 18 months old, a little Ukrainian boy has already suffered from misfortune – he is completely deaf on both ears from birth. He has a dream to hear his mother’s voice, animals at the zoo, airplane in the skies. Unfortunately, even the most powerful hearing aid will not help him. But there is a hope, Timothy needs an urgent cochlear implant surgery within next 6 months that would allow him to begin developing his hearing and speaking skills, and not fall behind in the development process. Timothy was born on January 10, 2014 in Vyshgorod, Ukraine. As a close friend of Timothy’s family, my heart is breaking to know that this little boy’s chance to hear and speak is running out.

It’s unfair that little babies suffer from such misfortunes, but your donation can help make tremendous impact that will change Timophy’s life forever. Please help us raise $12,000 for his cochlear implant surgery.

How the money will be used?

All of the raised money will be transferred to Timophy’s parents in Ukraine and used on the cochlear implant surgery, which is a surgically implanted electronic device that provides a sense of sound to a person who is profoundly deaf. Cochlear implants help provide hearing in patients who are deaf because of damage to sensory hair cells in their cochleas. Operation is simple and can successfully be performed in Ukraine, but it comes with a hefty price of $23,000, the funds that Timothy’s family doesn't have. Majority of the cost for the surgery comes from the implant that is imported to Ukraine from Austria. Timothy’s family was able to come up with $11,000 by selling everything that was valuable and receiving donations from close family and friends, however they are still running $12,000 short.

How does the cochlear implant work?

Cochlear implant surgery can help Timophy hear almost 100% on one ear. Performing surgery on both ears will be extremely expensive at this point. Cochlear implant bypasses damaged portions of the ear and directly stimulates the auditory nerve. Signals generated by the implant are sent by way of the auditory nerve to the brain, which recognizes the signals as sound. On the outside of the ear, the implant coupled with a magnet in which the signal is transmitted. Hearing through a cochlear implant is different from normal hearing and takes time to learn. However, it will allow Timothy to recognize warning signals, understand other sounds in the environment, and one day enjoy a conversation with his loved ones.

What does the future hold for cochlear implants?

The implant is implanted for life, however the processor requires constant maintenance and battery replacement, but that’s nothing in comparison to the ability to hear. After the surgery, there is a gradual connection of the implant and a long and laborious rehabilitation and training. But the results are stunning, Timophy will be able to normally develop and enjoy a full life.
