BENEFITING: CAMP CARE INC
EVENT DATE: Sep 12, 2015
Camp CARE provides 180+ children a week long summer camp experience at no cost to the families. This is a chance for kids battling cancer to enjoy a fun environment with other kids just like them, with scars and oftentimes no hair. It allows them the chance to forget about their cancer and hospital/clinic routine and just be a kid. They form new friendships, conquer fears, and participate in activities they never thought possible. Camp is staffed by 90+ counselors, many of which are former patients or current hospital/clinic staff, that give up a week of their time (often using their own vacation time) to spend the week with our children.
In September 2007, Jackson was diagnosed with leukemia (ALL) and underwent chemo and other treatments over the course of the next 3 ½ years. Throughout his treatment, we strived to make life as normal for Jackson as possible as well as keeping a positive attitude. Camp Care played a significant role in helping to keep his spirits up. It was his “best week of the year” during his treatment and remains that way even today. The first year of camp was a rough one for Jackson. He was only 8 years old and had never slept away from home. Due to the leukemia and some of the more intense chemo periods, he was unable to walk more than a few steps due to painful joints and weak muscles. He had to be carried or driven in a golf cart most everywhere at camp. He was physically unable to participate in a lot of the activities but still stuck it out for the entire week and couldn’t wait to go back the next year.
Please help send more Superheroes to camp by donating to this awesome organization.
Don't forget to watch the video slideshow where you'll see images of the kids/counselors participating in activities from this year's camp. We've posted a few photos of Jackson from previous years as well.
Thank you for your support!
