Jacob the great!
Organized by: Martha Roca
Jacob was born on June 12th, 2016 at 26weeks gestational; 14 weeks before he was finished cooking! He weighed 1pound 4oz at birth and is currently a little over 2pounds. However, prematurity is NOT the only battle he is facing. The best way to describe this journey is to compare it to a roller coaster. Jacob is currently at Miami Children's Hospital in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit(NICU). We had a strong fight in the beginning but it took a turn for the worse. We thought Jacob would be coming home soon as long as he packed on the weight. However, that was not the case. Not only do premature babies have one of the toughest battles, but they are more prone to infections than any other persons. While in the NICU, Jacob encountered the biggest fear all the Parents, Nurses and Doctors have. A disease in the top 10 causes of Death in infants with a 0-30% chance of survival. Necrotizing Enterocolitis(NEC) is the horrible disease I speak of. It is a disease that doctors have yet to find a cure for and understand what causes this infection. NEC is when the intestines wall become infected. This infection causes the intestines to perforate and die and have to be removed. Sometimes it is treated with antibiotics other times with surgery. Unfortunately, Jacob was not one of the lucky ones who only needed antibiotics. In the past week, my son had to have surgery to remove some of the intestines not once or twice but three times!!!!!!! Can you imagine your 2 pound baby getting surgery? Let alone 3 times & to top it off, in 1 week back to back? It has been a hard week. With the hospital being 3 hours away it makes it hard to travel and see my precious baby. I was fortunate enough to have a team of coworkers who covered my shifts so I could have time with him. It makes it hard financially because not only are medical bills adding up, so are cost. It's $25/day to rent a room from a foundation here at the hospital so I can try and get some rest and a place to shower. The cost of driving back and forth also plays a huge factor & forget about eating. I'll skip 2 meals a day so I can have enough to pay my other expenses. Being here with my baby requires me to take time off work which is not paid; understandable. But with so many cost and no income, it's becoming overwhelming. Setting up this fundraiser will allow me to take the time off work that I need so I can be with my baby while he fights for his life. I'm a single mother and trying my best to do what I can, but it is hard. I'm just hoping you guys came help us fight this battle! Help spread the word about NEC & get more research and study on this disease that takes so many infants lives. I ask that you please keep us in your prayers and hope to have Jakey home soon.
