Jacob's Story Stop Gun Violence
Organized by: Alison Hastings
I'm raising funds to create an educational scholarship to raise responsible gun awareness. Our kids should be able to make mistakes without being shot. Help me raise awareness about alternatives to violence. All donations will go towards a scholarship essay contest in Jacob's honor.
Jacob Maldonado was 20 years old, a kind son, and a good brother. Jacob was shot and killed by a man for trespassing on his land. JM had not broken into this man's home; he had not threatened anyone with a weapon or violence. He was simply behind two other young men that the landowner believed were stealing from his junkyard. This is a tragic story that scares and inspires me and I ask that people pause and contemplate this senseless loss.
I am not condoning trespassing nor condemning guns. I'm questioning the death of a young man and I'm worried about my own son's future. We are all aware of the worldwide tragedies and violent conflicts that are broadcasted on the daily news. The injustices on our screens seem so removed from our lives and the destruction often seems beyond anyone's control. But if we can make a small change in the way we as individuals think about violence, the value of life and responsible use of guns it's an accomplishment that has the potential to prevent future tragedies.
