THIS YEAR I AM RUNNING MY 5th BOSTON MARATHON AND THIS YEAR I AM DEDICATING MY RUN TO HEROES!
WHAT IS A HERO? A person who is admired or idealized for courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities.
WHO ARE MY HEROES? JOE ANDRUZZI, ROB PILCHER, JACQUELINE HURLEY
WHY AM I SO EXCITED TO TALK ABOUT HEROES? I have been accepted as part of the 2014 JOE ANDRUZZI BOSTON MARATHON TEAM to run in the memory of HEROES: ROB and MY MOTHER.
I first met Joe Andruzzi at DFCI where he had the courage to battle Burkitt's Lymphoma with the same perserverance and intensity that earned him 3 Superbowl rings! But what he and Jen did was turn their own experince into a noble cause. To create the Joe Andruzzi foundation.
The Joe Andruzzi Foundation is committed to providing help, hope, and a reason to smile for cancer patients and their families by contributing financial and emotional support when it is needed most.
So why am I choosing to run for JAF when I already have an entry to run the Boston Marathon? Because I believe in their cause and I know first hand that cancer patients and their families cannot lose HOPE in their fight against cancer and LAUGHTER really is the best medicine. Even the best medical insurance doesn't cover your utilities bills when you are unable to go to work for your treatment. Its the small things which the JAF foundation provides, that make a MAJOR impact on the lives of those affected by Cancer.
In August many gathered in Chicago IL to say our good byes to an amazing young man. ROB PILCHER. Team Rob was formed after our dear friend was diagnosed with a rare form of bone cancer. He underwent extensive treatments and surgeries to remove half his pelvis and reconstruct a hip. He spent many weeks in Houston, away from his three adorable boys, to try and beat this sucker. This summer his osteosarcoma reared its ugly head and we all lost a HERO. In his eulogy, his best friend described Rob as the ultimate combination of "Compassion and Fun". Rob had the courage to fight when doctors may have advised more palliative care. He continued to coach his sons sports teams, getting the thrill of staying up late, devising game plans to outsmart the opposing 10 year olds. He was a loving husband and a hero to three young boys. He showed Ryan, Colin and Brady that HEROES can look fear in the eyes and show that they will not back down or give in to the defeat. And he did this all while making us laugh!
And who is the real wind beneath my wings? The Heroin who gave me the courage and inspiration to run 18 marathons, scale highest peak in Africa, and pedal my bike across the state of massachusetts? That's Mom! If you are reading this then you most likely know of her courageous battle against Colon Cancer. She may not have entered a resume full w/ acts of epic proportion but her kindness and love for everyone around her made her heroic. She never let cancer prevent her from making someone's day better with a smile. Now you know "How on earth I can be smiling after running 26 miles ?"
