THE STORY:

I am excited and honored to be running in the 118th Boston Marathon, raising funds to benefit the Joe Andruzzi Foundation.

Of course, I wasn't planning to run another Boston Marathon at all. I ran last year to make up for an abysmally hot and slow run in 2011. My second time out was fantastic - perfect weather, amazingly supportive crowds, and so meaningful to be running through the city that I still think of as home even after over two decades in NYC. My sister was even working at the finish line to give me a hug when it was over! As my smile in the photo suggests, it was a perfect and wonderful day...until it turned into a tragic and horrible one.

I am lucky and I know it. I wasn't hurt that day, nor were any of my loved ones (a small miracle, really - had Jim and my parents chosen to walk down Boylston instead of Newbury to meet me, they would have been very much in harm's way). I finished the race, had a great run, and even came "this close" to re-qualifying. I did what I had set out to do.

But I have to and want to go back and run that course one more time. The Boston Marathon is every cliched thing that people say it is. It's a logistical feat, a physical and emotional challenge (those hills!), a heartening demonstration of camaraderie between and among runners and spectators. Many marathons share those characteristics, but Boston is, well, "Boston!" It has a special mystique. And this time I want to be able to fully celebrate that. So I'll be back in Hopkinton on April 21st.

I am also lucky because I will be running to raise funds for an organization that I feel a strong connection with. Joe Andruzzi is a native New Yorker who was an offensive guard for the New England Patriots from 2000-2005 and now lives in the Boston area. He is a cancer survivor who, even prior to his own diagnosis, was active in the fight against that disease. The Joe Andruzzi Foundation's mission is to provide "help, hope and a reason to smile" to cancer patients and their familes by providing financial assistance and emotional support.

In the last couple of years alone I've seen too many people I love - otherwise-healthy, active moms my age, not to mention my own mother - be diagnosed with and treated for cancer. That process can put a tremendous strain on a family's financial and emotional resources. I am proud to be raising funds to try and ease that burden. I hope you'll join me. A donation at any level - even a small token of your support for the Joe Andruzzi Foundation and/or for the Boston Marathon - is so very welcome. If you have questions or would like more information, just ask me, or check out the foundation's website: joeandruzzifoundation.org.

Wish me luck on the 21st!

Best,

Rebecca
