EVENT DATE: Apr 26, 2014
Cancer…just a word…until it’s directed at you.
I do not remember the date, but I do remember where I was standing, the direction I was facing, and the fact that I was holding the phone. The woman on the other end of the phone had just said it…Cancer…and it was directed at me.
Everything she said after that sounded like words spoken under water and I retained none of it. I was scared, and had just relayed the wrong information to my father - Stage 4, Grade 2; or was it Stage 2, Grade 4 – I didn’t even know what Grade meant. I wasn’t sure of anything, except that I had Cancer.
The flurry of information that follows a diagnosis is overwhelming and patients need help deciphering what it means, how to tell family, making appointments for physicians and tests, and on and on.
The Joan Karnell Supportive Care Program at Abramson Cancer Center at Pennsylvania Hospital, is an integral part of ensuring patients receive the support to continue Moving Forward from diagnosis through treatment and into survivorship. Your donations will provide the Cancer Risk Evaluation Program, Oncology Nurse Navigation, Nutrition Counseling, Psychological Services, Spiritual Counseling, Shiatsu Massage, Music Therapy, Art Therapy, and finally the Supportive Care Fund which provides assistance with treatment related costs such as transportation for patients (cab vouchers, bus tokens, and parking stickers) and nutritional supplements at low or no cost to patients.
