I’ve been running most of my life, never any long distances, 3 miles here, 8 miles there, some 5Ks and 10Ks and a handful of half-marathons. I was introduced to Team Tassy after having watched the trailer for the documentary Further on The North Face website. Further tells the story of the first organized, 240-mile ultra-marathon traversing the entire length of Haiti. This group of people that attempted this massive run in the name of an organization that was dedicated to ending extreme poverty through good and dignified jobs inspired me. At that moment, I knew that I had to help and be apart of this team.
I grew up at the knee of my grandmother, who would speak to me about the Haiti she remembered; clean, safe, productive and simple. I was never fortunate enough to ever go and visit this land she spoke so highly of, until now.
This February, one foot in front of the next, for 230 miles, I’ll do my part to prove to the world that the Haiti my grandmother once spoke of still exists, a place not to feel sorry for or to fear, a place full of potential.
