In 2011 Jamaica built its first dental school, at which time 2/3 of citizens had visible tooth decay, only 10-15% of Jamaicans had access to private dental care, and only 10% of children and 0.1% of adults were able to have one trip per year to the dentist. There are only 8 dentists per 100,000 individuals on the island, and there is a heavy dependence on foreign aid for healthcare. The 1000 Smiles program by Great Shape, Inc. provides sustainable clinical care to over 20,000 Jamaicans each year, with over 350 volunteers year-round. I am so proud to be one of these volunteers, and am looking forward to helping to provide care to the people of Jamaica!
