BENEFITING: GLEASONS GIVE A KID A DREAM
EVENT: FIGHTERS 4 LIFE IX
EVENT DATE: May 10, 2017
DAY TO GO
Jamie Lewis (aka “JLEW”) grew up in the midwest and went to DePauw University thinking she would join the music school to become a concert pianist, but reversed course quickly. When the two guys whom she thought were the smartest in school told her they were moving to New York to become investment bankers but she wasn’t smart or tough enough to do it . . . that’s exactly what this gutsy girl did. Initially living in YMCAs throughout the city, she found her rhythm eventually and spent the next twenty years working on Wall Street. Along the way she fell in love. First with a guy who compelled her to move to London. Always active, she found herself at a loss - running in the rain and in the dark didn’t appeal to her and the options for fitness in the UK at the time paled in comparison to the NYC offerings. Then she met a Scottish woman who trained her to box and fell in love again, but this love proved eternal.
Sugar Ray Leonard couldn’t have said it better: “Rhythm is everything in boxing. Every move you make starts with your heart, and that's in rhythm or you're in trouble.” For the last ten years boxing has been Jamie’s true love. It challenges her not just physically but also mentally and feeds her soul. She’s found unmatched comradery in boxing gyms from coast to coast. Unlike Wall Street where you’re judged on your pedigree, sex, looks, connections, education, historical successes or failures, you earn respect in boxing through blood, sweat and tears. When you get in that ring, all that matters is how much hard work you’ve put in and how much heart you have. It takes guts and that’s just fine with JLEW . . . a woman who loves to surf, travel and lives by the motto “do one thing a day that scares you.”
Recently she left her hedge fund career, went back to school at Fashion Institute of Technology, and started a business making bags she calls her #BagsWithASilverLining with an underlying mission to empower women and a specific dedication to manufacturing here in New York. She wants to encourage women to dream big, take risks and pursue their passion. She believes whatever you play, ride or love, JLEW Bags will carry you in forward motion.
Now too old to compete in the Golden Gloves, she’s excited to fight for a cause like Fighters4Life
