THE STORY:

Hi Everyone!

Thank you for taking the time to visit my fundraising page. I was recently accepted as a fellow for the non-profit corporation Community Water Solutions (CWS). As a fellow, I will be traveling to Tamale, Ghana from December 27th, 2012 to January 17th, 2013 working to address waterborne diseases and the lack of clean drinking water.

Did you know...

  • 884 million people lack access to safe water supplies; approximately one in eight people
  • Half of the world's hospital beds are filled with people suffering from waterborne diseases
  • 1.8 million people die each year from preventable waterborne diseases--90% of which are children under the age of 5

Like many developing countries, Ghana struggles to provide clean water to its residents, especially those in rural areas such as northern Ghana, where water purification sytems fail to reach. However, CWS has an approach to change this: implement a water treatment business, run by women from the local villages, in order to reduce waterborne diseases and create a stable, sustainable mechanism for safe drinking water supported by the village itself. As a fellow, I will be learning how to treat the water and construct the purification mechanisms, and in turn, educate the women. Once the women are educated, they will use our donated materials to purify the water, bring the water to the market or a central location, and sell the water to the villagers. The items are very low-cost and intended for community-scale water treatment. The intent of this method is to educate the villagers not only on water treatment but also on sustaining a business.

However, before I can help anyone in Ghana, I need your help. Each CWS fellow must fundraise $3,000 to cover the costs of water treatment materials, monitoring and evaluation mechanisms, and in-country lodging and food. CWS is a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation, and all donations are tax deductible; everyone who donates will receive a receipt automatically.

As I have progressed through my MPH, I have constantly learned about the impact the water crisis has had on the world. Now, I feel compelled to make a change, and I saw no better time to utilize this fellowship opportunity than over my winter break (sure to be the last time I have four weeks off from anything). I know time off of this magnitude is unavailable to many of you, so I am hoping by you acting as a sponsor of my trip we can all contribute in some way to addressing the water crisis. I sincerely appreciate any amount people are able to donate; wishes of good luck are equally appreciated!

Thank you!

Jane
