My name is Jan. I don't normally ask for things for myself. This time I will. They say pride goeth before the fall, so I am setting my pride aside and asking for help. in August of 2010, I was diagnosed with a rare autoimmune disease called fibrillary glomerulonephritis. I thought to myself, if I can't pronounce it, I shouldn't be allowed to have it. I've learned to pronounce it. It is killing my kidneys. I am right about 20% usage of them as we speak. I have undergone 5 monthly chemotherapy treatments, one more to go in January. I also take steroids every other day. This is to slow the progress of the autoimmune disease only. There is no known cause, and no known cure. I am headed for a kidney transplant. Luckily, my daughter has volunteered one of hers. We are waiting to hear from the people who will test us to make sure we match.
One of the things that I am getting used to is the myriad of doctor appointments that I have to go to. I am getting ready to start dialysis in a couple of months, and that will mean at least 3 half days out of my schedule each week. My car has been in disrepair for quite some time, and I was gifted some money by a relative to get it fixed. It's imperative that one has a car for all of this...I have been relying on friends, and their generosity of rides to and from all my appointments. While my car was at the repair shop it was stolen. Sigh. So, I am at last asking for something for me.

First, I absolutely need reliable transportation, so am asking for donations to help that come about. I will get insurance money from the repair shop, since it occurred on their property. But, I doubt that it will get me very far in the reliable car department. Secondly, I am self employed, and when I do the dialysis that will cut back severely on my income. And when the transplant does happen (hopefully sometime in 2011), I will have to take at least 2 months off, with no income at all.

So, if you feel that you'd like to donate to my cause, I'd appreciate it. If you'd rather donate to a national kidney foundation of your choice, that's OK by me, too. It will go to good use, helping out someone who really needs it.

Thank you for listening.

It's only a little, but you could buy yourself a delicious meal after you get sick of hospital food (it won't take too long for you to be running to the first restaurant you see!). 7 years ago
