BENEFITING: JARC

2nd Annual Art Van Charity Challenge

THE STORY:

JARC is a non-profit, non-sectarian organization founded in 1969 by a group of parents concerned about the future of their children with developmental disabilities. Today, JARC is known as a prototype for innovative, high-quality residential and support programs for people with developmental disabilities, and has led the way in enriching lives and erasing barriers. JARC currently serves more than 600 individuals and families in its quality programs in Oakland County. JARC’s attractive and well-maintained group homes serve men and women with developmental disabilities who have a wide range of needs. JARC’s independent living programs provide varying amounts of staff support to help individuals live in their own homes and apartments in the community. JARC also has a range of programs for children and adults living at home with their families, including in-home respite services, inclusive education and recreation services, advocacy, life planning, and social opportunities. Originally, JARC stood for Jewish Association for Retarded Citizens. However, by the 1980s that language was no longer considered acceptable to describe the people served. As the agency was already well known as JARC, it became the legal name and today it is simply known as JARC.
