Project Purple is a non-profit organization with a mission of raising awareness and funds towards a cure for pancreatic cancer. Their ultimate goal is to see a cure put them out of business in the next five years. Sadly the statistics are staggering. Pancreatic cancer is the 4th largest killer of all cancer killers and the least funded of the top 10 cancers. It is also the only cancer on the top 10 list with a single digit survival rate after 5 years.
10 Years ago, my mother was diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer. At the time I knew very little of what is a one of the worst cancers there is. It was discovered late enough that none of the surgeries could be performed to try to extend her life, and only Chemo was an option. Sadly, 11 months later she passed away. One of the things I remember most was running in Division 3 nationals, and my dad telling me to run my best because this might the last race I run while my mother was still alive. At that time, I didnt even realize it was going to be so soon. I ran my heart out in an extremely muddy race, that saw the national champion running 3 minutes slower than his best time, as a result of all of the rain and mud. I was the 5th man on our team, and finished with 136 team points, and helping us to finish 12th.
Whenever I can, I try to find walks or other forms of charities to support Pancreatic Cancer research. It wasn't until this year that I found that Project Purple supports Tough Mudder races. I find it only fitting that I will get to be running in this race through the mud, much in the same way I ran at nationals 10 years ago. So please support me in my run to raise awareness and money towards research to help stop this terrible disease.
