Two years ago, Prisca was married and expecting her first child... she thought that her life long dream of going to secondary school had vanished. Prisca wasn't married or pregnant by choice. When she was 14 and staying with relatives, her uncle married her to a middle aged man in order to collect the "bride price", her dowry. He traded his nieces life away for a few cows.
Today, Prisca is a Form 1 student at Daraja Academy. When her father learned of the illegal marriage, he rescued her with the aid of the local police. Soon after she learned that she was to be a mother.
I founded Daraja Academy three years ago, but this is the first time I am asking freinds and family for support. Though principal of the school, I am partnered in the Daraja Race for 77 with Prisca because she deserves her life long dream. This is a very unique event. Daraja supporters, paired with Daraja Academy with begin to run for the school at the same time on opposite siges of the world. The supporters in the US will be running in Bay to Breakers as a way of raising awareness. funds and showing support. Two-time, female Bay to Breakers winner Lineth Chepkurui of Kenya will also be running for the school!
At the very same moment he moment the race begins in San Francisco, all 77 Daraja Academy girls will begin to run in the East African twilight. They are so excited to finally be able to raise money for the school that has given them so much.
Please show these amazing girls that you believe in them. By donating what you can, Prisca's chance at a much brighter future has improved.
