BENEFITING: One Love Foundation in honor of Yeardley Love
EVENT DATE: Oct 17, 2015
Mileage Tracker: 280
In the past few years, I have run in the marathon relay as part of a four person team in the Baltimore Running Festival. This year, I am turning it up a bit (this amp goes to 11), and attempting to take down the entire 26.2 myself. Training has been much more enjoyable than I expected, yet still taxing. A recent 20 miler training run took me from Hampden through Charles Villiage, Downtown, Federal Hill, Fort McHenry, the Inner Harbor, Fells Point, Canton and Lake Clifton.
In my marathon endeavor, I am raising money and awareness for an indispensable organization. Please consider supporting me (I need the motivation!) and the One Love Foundation.
The One Love Foundation in honor of Yeardley Reynolds Love was created in 2010 to honor the memory of Yeardley Love, a UVA senior who was beaten to death by her ex-boyfriend just weeks short of graduation. The Foundation is more popularly known as One Love, with “One” representing the number that Yeardley wore on her jersey during her high school and college lacrosse career.
After her death, Yeardley’s family and friends were surprised to learn the statistics – that 1 in 3 women in this country will be in a violent relationship during her lifetime – and grew increasingly aware that young people in particular did not seem to realize they, as a group, were at greatest risk.
Today, One Love's goal is to end relationship violence by engaging young people in a movement for change. We develop compelling educational content that sparks new and novel discussions among workshop participants, inspiring them to work together to affect change in their communities. Our primary focus is on campus strategies for engaging kids on this issue – using our powerful film workshop, Escalation, as the spark for engagement (see video that Katie Couric did in May). At every step, we empower young people as the critical leaders of this movement, uniquely suited to mobilize a generation towards a brighter future where relationship violence is far less prevalent. We currently are working with 200 colleges and 95 high schools across the country and want to continue building off this momentum.
The Baltimore Running Festival will raise awareness and funds to help One Love expand our presence nationally. We hope you will join the One Love team by running in the Baltimore Marathon, Half Marathon, Team Relay, or 5K. Non-runners can also support One Love by fundraising and volunteering on race day.
The Baltimore Running Festival includes five distances through the scenic Inner Harbor waterfront area, historic Federal Hill and Fells Point. Register for the race at www.thebaltimoremarathon.com using team name "One Love Foundation" and our team password 1Love15. Packet pickup will take place at the Health and Fitness Expo on Thursday, October 16 from noon to 8 PM or Friday, October 17 from noon to 9 PM.
