BENEFITING: CHILDREN'S HEMIPLEGIA AND STROKE ASSN.
EVENT DATE: Sep 06, 2014
Jaynie, Zach, and I would like to run/walk to raise awareness for Children's hemiplegia and infantile stroke.
Around 6 months old we noticed that Jaynie was favoring her right arm and leg. Our doctor told us to monitor it and as the milestones kept coming we noticed she was delayed in sitting up, crawling, and being able to hold things. Her left hand and arm were getting tighter and tighter. It became really difficult to open her fist or raise her left arm. At 9 months old, after an EEG and an MRI, Jaynie was diagnosed with a stroke in utero which has caused her to be hemiplegic on her left side. Although the news has definitely been hard on us, we love her SO much and take comfort in God's plan for her. He has given all of us a wonderful support system where we get much of our strength. We cannot be thankful enough for our family and friends!
Jaynie update: Thus far she’s doing really well post diagnosis! We’re starting her in weekly physical therapy, and then in three months she’ll start speech therapy once a week too. I’ve had a lot of people ask me if she’ll be able to walk, talk, or use her left side after therapy-and the truth is we don’t know. We’re very hopeful but she’s really too young to tell at this point. She can army crawl on her belly and say bababa at 11 months. All we do know is that she loves eating her vegetables, and loves looking at herself in the mirror (Just like mommy). :)
8/29: Jaynie is 1 yr old, is enrolled in both Occupational and Physical Therapy, and is doing great! We're still working on crawling properly and putting weight on the left side, but we have seen progess. Her therapist recommended a foot brace as her left toes are getting curlier, so we're waiting on approval for that. Luckily, she has a mother who can be super annoying when she wants something as her advocate. I'm sure we'll get approval soon!
The donations will go directly to the Children's Hemiplegia and Stroke Association. CHASA awards all sorts of grants for hemiplegic children that need things like orthotics for their hand and foot, as well as connect families of little stroke survivors and children with hemiplegia around the world to share support and information.
CHASA also funds innovative research studies and has teamed with researchers in dozens of studies to recruit study participants.

"I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. My frame was not hidden from you when I was placed in the secret place, when I was woven together in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw my unformed body; all the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be."- Psalm 139:14-16
