BENEFITING: MIKEYS WAY FOUNDATION
Joel Barlow, a high school of roughly 1,000 kids, connects grades 9-12 of the small New England towns of Easton and Redding. Barlow prides itself in creating a sense of community between the two towns. By emphasizing the importance of creating and fostering a welcoming community for all people, the Barlow students and staff are driven to help create the area surrounding Joel Barlow the best it can be.
Just down the street from Joel Barlow is the office of the Mikey's Way Foundation. Michael Friedman, a Barlow alumni, was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive form of cancer known as Desmoplastic Small Round Cell Tumor or DSRCT. Mikey wanted a way to help connect and enrich the lives of children suffering with cancer and other life-threatening illnesses. It is the goal of the foundation to be able to connect every child with their friends, family and school, enabling them to cope with the long hours, days and weeks of separation that they must endure. The “Mikey’s Way Connection Cart” circles the pediatric floors of the hospitals we serve, giving away all forms of electronics that permit the child to create their own diversion and thus allow for the Mind-Body connection. Every child is allowed to choose the item that they feel will work best for them. More information on the foundation can be found here:
Joel Barlow High School has been a proud supporter of Mikey's Way for many years now, but ever since the Class of 2015 came in as freshmen, their relationship has strengthened. Unfortunately, Mikey has passed away in 2008 but now seniors, the Class of 2015 has made it their duty to help give back to the community Michael Friedman has touched the hearts of. Every event the class runs, they split their earnings 50/50 with Mikey's Way. As their high school career is coming to an end, the Seniors wanted to find a way to culminate the school spirit at Joel Barlow while also raising funds for the Mikey's Way Foundation, and hence the lip-dub!
As a way to help support pediatric cancer and the Mikey's Way Foundation, we ask that you donate $15 to the JBHS Class of 2015 and we will split all donations between the two entities. The Class of 2015 is looking to help give back to the senior class for all the hard work they have put into the amazing community that is Easton, Redding, Region 9 (ER9). But also by doing so, the Seniors are looking to continue to make an impact by giving 50% of the funds raised to the Mikey's Way Foundation. Our goal is to help raise ONE "Mikey's Way Days" for a local hospital. With each shopping spree costing $5,000, our goal is to raise $10,000 for the Class of 2015 and Mikey's Way.
Thank you in advance, and every little bit helps.
