EVENT: Boston Marathon 2014
Why I am running the Boston Marathon, and WHO I am running for:
The 2014 Boston Marathon will be my 3rd and final marathon. I will be turning 40 this June, I have 2 wonderful active kids, the most supportive caring husband, and I own a fitness studio. I have always wanted to run the Boston Marathon, it has been a goal of mine for the last 10 years. After the 2013 Marathon bombing, I decided it was time to achieve my goal. I realize that I am a person who reacts to tragedy. It motivates me to do good things for others. The terrorist attacks on Boston and NY are both linked to my story...they both changed my life. They are both motivating me to run this marathon, raise money, and accomplish my goal.
The charity I will be running for and raising money for is the Jeff Coombs Memorial Foundation. I am honored and excited to raise money for this foundation and this family. My connection to the Coombs family goes back 15 years:
In 1998 I was working for Knight Securities, an equities trading firm based in Jersey City, NJ. I started working in the Boston office. We were a small trading desk with 8 people. In June of 2001 I moved to Hoboken, NJ and transfered to Knight NJ. I was engaged and my now husband was living in Hoboken.
On September 7, 2001, I met my fiance at the World Trade Center. We were going to Windows of the World for drinks. We met a few friends...I remember taking 2 elevators to get to the top. I saw the Cantor Fitzgerald sign and thought "Why would anyone work here, its so high up!" I saw many tiny planes flying below us. We took the ferry home and I watched the buildings the entire way across the Hudson. They were massive!
Tuesday September 11, 2001 was a beautiful blue sky day. My desk was on the 33rd floor in Jersey City facing the twin towers. I was told a small plane had crashed into the World Trade Towers. Standing at the window I instantly knew this wasn't a small plane, and it WASN'T an accident. I stood in shock for a while, staring out the window. My phone rang over and over, but for some reason I couldn't answer it. Eventually, I answered only ONE call from Billy Coombs, I worked with Billy in the Boston Knight office. We were friends, and had kept in touch. He was calling to make sure Craig (my fiance) was ok. Craig worked at One World Financial (across from World Trade Center). What Billy didn't know was at that very moment his brother Jeff Coombs was on that first plane that had crashed into the World Trade Center.
For some reason something made me answer Billy's phone call that morning. I'd like to think it was Jeff. I never got the honor to meet Jeff, didn't know him at all. But ever since 9/11 I have felt some connection to him. I will be running this race for Jeff, for all those victims of 9/11 AND the Boston bombings, AND for the Coombs family. I am honored to run this race and most importantly raise money for this foundation in Jeff's name!!! Please help me help them!!!
About This AMAZING Charity:
The Jeff Coombs Foundation was formed to assist families who are in financial need because of a death, illness or other situation that challenges the family budget. It also provides emotional support to families by funding special outings and fun events. Committed to education, the foundation helps fund enrichment programs in the Abington Schools, and awards scholarships to graduating college-bound seniors and students in private high schools.
The foundation was created in response to the incredible outpouring of support Jeff’s family received after he was killed on Flight 11 in the 9/11/01 terrorist attacks. Christie, Jeff’s wife, and their kids, Matthew, Meaghan, and Julia, wanted a way to “pay it forward.” They began raising money to help others in November, 2001. Since then, the Foundation has raised and distributed about $50,000 a year in Jeff’s memory.
