BENEFITING: Joslin Diabetes Center
ORGANIZER: Joslin Diabetes Center
EVENT: Boston Marathon 2014
EVENT DATE: Apr 21, 2014
Why am I running? For many reasons, some for individual goals but, most importantly, as a way of helping a team that does tremendous work in the care and treatment of diabetes.
Approximately 2 years ago, my wife was diagnosed with breast cancer. Thankfully, through the great work of her medical team and the support of many families and friends, she is doing great. One family that really helped out was that of my friend, Jerry Branka. What you may not know is that one of Jerry’s daughters, Lilly, has been a patient at Joslin since she was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at age 3. Now 12, Lilly does not let diabetes inhibit her in any way. She is a great kid, with a great attitude. She has raised funds to help those less fortunate deal with diabetes, starred in fundraising videos, met the Governor and other elected officials, all in an effort to raise awareness about diabetes and to help Joslin, . To put it in perspective, more than 3 million Americans have Type 1 diabetes. Each year in the US, more than fifteen thousand children, and fifteen thousand adults- about eighty people each day, are diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. There is no cure for Type 1 diabetes, and the impact the disease has on individuals, and their families is truly exhausting.
I am running the marathon as a way of thanking Lilly for her courage, and to help Joslin continue their great work. I am well on my way to achieving my fundraising goal; however, I want to far exceed my initial goal.
