Russ Harty's Fundraiser:

Jordan Harris Memorial Fundraiser for Chicago Marathon

THE STORY:

This October I am running the Chicago Marathon and will be raising funds for Jordan's Memorial Fund which benefits research and awareness related to adolescent and young adult depression: http://cfntx.org/jehmemorialfund. In the short four years that I knew her, Jordan had a remarkable impact on me that continues with me today. Her genuine desire to reach out and help others was just as infectious as her laugh. I often find myself in situations thinking "What would Jordan do?". One reason I am raising funds in her honor for my first marathon is that she was the one who encouraged me to run in the Mackinac Island Half Marathon in October 2011, my longest race at the time. This was during the fall of our senior year and I never got to tell Jordan how much her support in getting me to train for the race helped to ease the often overwhelming stress I was experiencing at the time. Part way through training, Jordan realized she would not be able to run the whole race herself yet she still made the trip to Mackinac Island for the weekend to cheer us on at the finish line. A component of my training for the Chicago Marathon includes running several times as week with a group called Back on My Feet. This nonprofit organizes runs with members of the homeless community as means of empowerment for individuals affected by homelessness. I am doing this because I believe it is something Jordan would do - using every chance possible to better the lives of others. I am not aiming for a specific monetary goal with my fundraiser. My primary intention is to bring attention to the causes - depression research and awareness - that Jordan's memorial fund supports. I hope tthat everyone also takes the time to share or read stories of the impact that Jordan had in their own and others' lives through the following blog as well: http://jehlifecelebrations.blogspot.sg/

I met Jordan in Buenos Aires, Argentina during our semester abroad. She was always such a warm presence, sharing her light with everyone around her. I feel so blessed to have known her even though it was such a short time. Thank you for organizing such a great memorial fundraiser in her name! 4 years ago
