In 2013, my Grandma Libby lost her 14 year battle with Alzheimer's. Losing a loved one is always hard, and it is even more difficult when they no longer recognize you.
That is why I am Riding to Remember. I am riding in honor of my grandma, and also all of the people who helped care for her: my father, aunt, grandfather, and all of the nurses, friends, and family members who were there to support us.
There is currently no cure for Alzheimer's disease, and scientists don't even fully understand the cause, yet almost everyone knows someone who has been affected by this disease. It is estimated that more than 5 million people in the US suffer from Alzheimer's disease, and it is the 6th leading cause of mortality. That is why I support CaringKind - they are dedicated to providing New Yorkers with the time, space, and skills they need to be able to care with confidence for their loved ones and to eliminating Alzheimer's disease through the advancement of research. My family was extremely lucky to have the support system to care for my grandma, but not everyone has the same resources.
The Junior Committee of CaringKind, The Heart of Alzheimer’s Caregiving is excited to hold Ride to Remember, a spin event to help raise funds and awareness! Participants fundraise in order to participate in an afternoon of fun, awareness, and spinning (stationary cycling).
Join us for a spin class on May 22 at 1:30 pm at Swerve Fitness in Midtown West. Sign up to do the ride yourself, or sign up with a team to spin together! Everyone will receive their own fundraising page to track donations and share their reason for riding. We ask that each individual raise $150 by the date of the ride. In 2014, we raised over $18,000 and in 2015, we raised over $25,000. Help us make 2016 the best year yet!
After the classes there will be a fun cool down party where the top fundraisers will be recognized.
