EVENT DATE: Jul 17, 2016
Before our James Douglas was born we were aware he would spend some time in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). However, as we walked out of the NICU for the last time 111 days after he was born it was at that moment we truly realized the significance of each day we spent with JD.
During those 111 days Nate and I went to the hospital every single day. Nate would wake up early each morning before work to catch some snuggles with his newborn son. While I spent the morning with, then 1½ year old, Connor before heading to the hospital in the afternoon. Doctors, nurses, staff, specialist, therapists, and volunteers smiled at us each time we walked into the hospital. They knew our faces, they knew our names, they knew our baby. Spending time with JD while in the NICU was one of the most important things we did for his health, his growth, and his livelihood. We learned how to care for him from the experts, we educated the nurses on his personality, and we worked with the doctors to find the best treatments specific for JD. Without those daily interactions we believe JD’s progress would not have been as positive.
In honor of our 111 days in the NICU, Nate and I have created the Jogging of James team to run the 2016 Rock ‘n’ Roll Chicago Half Marathon in support for the Jackson Chance Foundation. JCF’s mission is to enrich the lives of families with babies in the NICU by allowing them to spend more time with their critically ill child, thus enriching and potentially extending their life.
You can help critically ill babies! Make a donation or join Jogging for James for the Rock 'n' Roll Chicago Half Marathon, 10k, or 5k on July 16 & 17 to help ensure the financial burden of parking and transportation does not stand in the way of any parent being with their child in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU).
