Hello! My name is Jenn Wray and I wanted to do the Summit for Someone program for many reasons. First of all, some of my most cherished experiences have been on trails. In the last 3 years, I've backpacked about 2,000 miles predominately on the Te Araroa and The Colorado Trail. These two trails have enriched my life in profound and unexpected ways. The people I've met, the kindness I've received, the camaraderie in the thru hiking community, and the personal empowerment that comes with a physical accomplishment are all things I would like to share and help others find for themselves.
I also have a strong passion for students and helping them find their own strength. I taught in low income schools for 5 years and in those years I got to experience the resiliency and determination of kids as well as the structural barriers that can sometimes stand in their way. While we could see the mountains from our building, many of my students had never set foot on a trail. I have so much admiration for an organization like BCM that takes under-resourced urban youth out into the backcountry and I am so excited to be a part of this program. The value of being on a trail is priceless to me and I feel honored to aid in their cause to share that experience with others. I have also been fortunate to have many experiences where I learn from my students. I am planning on going on a backpacking expedition this summer and I very much look forward to learning from the students and getting a glimpse into their unique perspective.
This program gives me the chance to summit a dream peak while also helping others summit their own project.
I hope you choose to support me and BCM, every little bit helps!
Below is more information about The Grand Teton and BCM. I would appreciate it so much if you would consider donating to my page!
The Grand Teton (13,770 feet) is one of the world’s most beautiful mountains. Since 1968, Jackson Hole Mountain Guides has provided mountain guiding services on the Grand and in many other locations throughout the West. Join us in undertaking this thrilling mountaineering challenge and an unforgettable experience! Our 3-day Grand Teton climb involves 14 miles round-trip, 14,000 feet of combined elevation gain and loss, extensive scrambling and fifth class (5.6) climbing on the way to the summit.
Big City Mountaineers transforms the lives of under-resourced urban youth through wilderness mentoring expeditions that instill critical life skills. We partner with community-based youth organizations and caring adult volunteers who act as mentors in the field to help young people realize their potential. Our curriculum improves integrity, self- esteem, responsibility, decision-making abilities and communication skills in close to 1,000 youth annually.
