I am proudly dancing in The Pink Fund's Dancing With The Survivors because… I believe in both the need and the benefits that The Pink Fund provides. Am I 'stepping' out of my comfort zone? You bet! Lessening someone's financial stress who is going through breast cancer enables them to reassert that energy in a more positive way. Dealing with treatments and healing takes A LOT; both mentally and physically. By assisting a recipient with their non-medical bills The Pink Fund helps patients to focus on what is most important; getting better. I'm investing the next two months to taking dance classes, learning choreography, spreading awareness, and raising funds.
I was diagnosed in January 2006 with High Grade Invasive Ductal Carcinoma - Stage 2 (with several lymph nodes showing extensive metastatic adenocarcinoma). I underwent surgeries, extensive chemotherapy, and radiation. I was one of the lucky ones. I had a solid support system; a great team of doctors, a loving family, and friends who helped me through each day.
The most valuable lesson I’ve learned from having breast cancer is… to learn to trust my instincts more, be persistent, gain knowledge from wherever I can, and never take NO for an answer. I have become my own advocate, because no one knows me better than me.
Breast cancer awakened me to… the need to constantly review and set new priorities. What I thought was important BEFORE breast cancer wasn't as important as I thought. It's never too late to re-establish your priorities, go after your dreams or create new ones, and decide what is most important to you.
