Rocking the Boat empowers young people challenged by severe economic, educational, and social conditions to develop the self-confidence to set ambitious goals and gain the skills necessary to achieve them. Students work together to build wooden boats, learn to row and sail, and restore local urban waterways, revitalizing their community while creating better lives for themselves. Kids don't just build boats, boats build kids.
Launched in 1996 as a volunteer project in an East Harlem junior high school, Rocking the Boat has since developed into an independent non-profit organization annually serving nearly 3,000 young people and community members.. Along with boatbuilders, sailors, and scientists, they have three Social Workers on staff who help to make these activities as powerful as possible in changing kids' lives and futures.
Located in Hunts Point, Rocking the Boat serves South Bronx youth using boatbuilding as a portal to environmental leadership and job skills development. Students work together to build wooden boats from scratch; learn to row, sail, and swim; and study and restore local urban waterways, revitalizing their community while creating better lives for themselves. Hunts Point sits in the poorest Congressional District in the nation and in the poorest zip code east of the Mississippi
Kids don't just build boats, boats build kids.
I hope you will join us in supporting the phenomenal Rocking the Boat. Thank you!
