THE STORY:

My story: As an athlete and individual born with club foot, I can appreciate how different my life would be without several surgeries to correct the birth defect. My parents did not have the money when I was born to pay for the surgeries necessary and it was through support of the Shriner's that I was able to undergo the multiple surgeries neeeded for me to be able to walk. There is now a much cheaper and more effective way to "fix" club foot (the Ponseti Method)- and Miraclefeet is the leading non profit organization aimed at helping those who cannot afford to have this life changing correction done. Miraclefeet increases access to proper treatment for children born with clubfoot in developing countries through partnerships with local healthcare providers. With the new method of treatment, for just an average of $250 per child, this correction can be accomplished and change the lives of these children forever. I am living proof! My goal is raise enough for 12 children's corrective treatments, which would amount to roughly $3000.00.

I am raising money in conjunction with my running the Tallahassee Marathon on February 2, 2014. The goal is to raise $100 a day for 30 days. It will be my first marathon in two years and my goal is to run a Boston Qualifying marathon time.

I was a swimmer growing up, having a successful swimming career, qualifying for a number of national events. But it was not until I was 19, and a friend challenged me to a 5k, that I tried to run, having long been told running impossible for someone with my disability. Since that run in 99', I have competed in numerous running events, including the Boston Marathon and more than 15 others, two Ironman events, several other triathlons and I qualified as a member of Team USA in triathlon, olympic distance, in 2013. My foot was impacted as a result of Ironman, though, and I was told by doctors that my x-rays indicated I should not be able to walk, much less run, but through use of compression wear, good running shoes and determination, I have been able to compete successfully. While this may be my last marathon run, I am passionate about raising funds for others to be able to enjoy similar successes as I have thanks to others who supported my parents when I was born.

Powerful story! As a fellow runner and a mother of a daughter born with bilateral club feet, I am so impressed and inspired by your work. I look forward to sharing your story with my own children. Best of luck to you! Margaret Hagood 3 years ago
