BENEFITING: THE MAYORS FUND TO ADVANCE NEW YORK CITY
UPDATE: Better late than never... The marathon has been cancelled. I'm signed up to run the Richmond Marathon on Nov 10th, instead.
I strongly disagree with the Mayor and NYRR's decision to have the Marathon on Sunday. I think it is insensitive, irresponsible, and just plain dumb. The day that I had been so excited about that I would get teary-eyed just thinking about the finish line is NOT HAPPENING. But I'm still running. I have been training for 4 months, and sitting this day out is not going to make it right.
For a few days, I was seriously considering dropping out on principle. I planned to travel to RIchmond, VA to complete an alternate marathon next week so that my training wouldn't go to waste. Maybe then, I'd still be able to have my Marathon-moment far enough away from the mess that I'd be able to put it out of my mind.
That's not the answer, either. That doesn't help anyone but myself. So my little compromise, my attempt to make myself feel a little bit less selfish, is to donate the money I would have spent travelling to Virginia to NYC charities.
It's still going to sting running past an army of volunteers on Sunday thinking about the other things they (and myself) should be doing around the city. But at least this is something.
I also do not believe in running races as a fundraising method. I don't really get the concept. To me, marathon running is an extremely selfish endeavor, and not something you should ask your friends and family to bankroll.
This time, however, is personal. I'm selfishly asking, that you all considering donating a bit here to help me feel slightly less like an asshole on Sunday.
