While a lot of people do something wild to celebrate their 21st birthday, I'll be doing something CRAZY (JUMPING INTO A FROZEN LAKE) the day before my 21st birthday!
This will be my eighth polar dip for Camp Sunshine, and I'm super excited to spend my birthday weekend doing a polar dip with hundreds of other people to support an organization that means the world to me. My family first attended camp in the summer of 1996 after I finished cancer treatment. Camp Sunshine is a retreat for children with life-threatening illnesses and their families, so the whole family gets to enjoy a fun week at camp while meeting other families that understand what they're going through because they're in the same situation... and families don't have to pay to attend. We had such an amazing time that we've been going back as volunteers every year since then and have started the Virginia Polar Dip to send more families from the Mid-Atlantic region to camp. This year, our goal is to raise $100,000, enough to send 50 families to Camp Sunshine. It's an ambitious goal, and that's why we need your help! Sign up to jump with us or consider making a donation to this awesome cause!
I'm now a nursing student at the University of Pennsylvania and am hoping to bring an even bigger crew than last year home with me to join in this birthday-weekend-cold-water-party (I'm looking at you, "Crazy College Kids"). Contrary to what the seemingly painful pictures might indicate, it's super fun. I promise :) If that's not convincing enough, I'll bribe you with the assurance of lots of hot chocolate and birthday cake.
This year I'll be jumping (wearing pink!) in honor of Elle, a courageous 11 year old brain tumor warrior who passed away recently. I met Elle and her family at Camp Sunshine several years ago and they've also been huge supporters of the VA Polar Dip, jumping and doing the "chicken dip" (toes in the water) with us in past years.
Come on, folks, you know you want to cross "jumping into a frozen lake in February" off your bucket list this year. If not, make a donation to make our frigid plunge worth it :)
