Together, with her tremendous support crew, Jenny successfully completed a solo crossing of the English Channel on August 20, 2011 in 56-deg water wearing a Speedo. In doing so, Jenny became the first Michigan woman to complete the crossing and was the Channel Swimming Association's fastest American in 2011 (11 hr 31 min).
Jenny met her husband at a Masters swim meet and they enjoy swimming and playing with their 2-year-old daughter. This middle school math teacher enjoys the outdoors, open water swimming and coaching with her husband, Noah, for the Ford Athletic Swim & Triathlon Club in SE Michigan.The Birmelin's were 2014 recipients of the United States Masters Swimming (USMS) Kerry O'Brian Coaching Award.
In 2011, Jenny also completed the USMS 25k open water swim along with a 16 mile swim from Tawas, Michigan to Charity Island in Lake Huron. Jenny's only salt water swims have been Alcatraz and a Golden Gate Bridge swim (2010) and the English Channel.
Jenny has raised funds for Cystic Fibrosis by swimming across Lake St Clair several times. She is the volunteer Event Director for the Cipriano Classic 5k Fun Run & Walk, to benefit the Cipriano family in Farmington Hills, Michigan.
In college, Birmelin played water polo for MSU and in high school, she enjoyed the experience of working on a Habitat House in Detroit with her dad and friends.
