Jen's Trip To Educate
Organized by: Jennifer Ayres
Hello, my name is Jennifer Ayres and I want to start this off by first thanking you for visiting my Crowdrise fundraiser page. THANK YOU!
I have joined a volunteer project through GoEco, www.goeco.org, to travel to Sing Buri, Thailand for 2 weeks and teach English to the children at one of the local orphanages (the video to the left is from a previous GoEco trip to Sing Buri, and is a good example of the sort of teaching I will be doing). My fundraising goal is $2000 and my deadline is January 1,2015.
To be completely honest, I wasn't going to do a fundraiser for this trip. I signed up for it, why should I ask you to help me pay for it? But then people started asking "How can I help", and that really got me to think about why I was so apprehensive to do a fundraiser. You see, the money I am raising is not only for the all inclusive cost (ie living arrangements and meals) of my stay, but for the cost of the flight as well. So my thought was, "How can I justify raising funds for the plane ticket? How does that money "directly go" to the orphanage?". But when people started to ask how they could help, I had to figure out what they saw about this trip that I wasn't seeing. What about this trip is worth investing in? How does a plane ticket make an impact in the lives of those in need? Well, here's how...
The orphanage programs rely heavily on volunteers to come and teach the children, as well as do maintenance of the building and the grounds, food prep, and after school activities. Also, the orphanages involved in the volunteer programs have integrated their own primary and secondary schools that are also open for impoverished families in the area. So their impact goes beyond the walls of the orphanages and reaches into the community where there is also a great need for education opportunities for the youth. What directly goes to the orphanages through your donation is this; a teacher, a gardener, a grounds keeper, a painter, a cook, a cleaner, a hug and an encouragement for a child in need. And this is possible because the money raised for this project is what will get me to Sing Buri, to be all these things for the orphanage, the children, and the community during my stay. That is the power of the impact your donation will have through this project.
Before I head out to SIng Buri, I will set up a facebook page and blog that all my sponsors can follow. Through these, you will be kept up to date on everything that is happening during the project, with pictures, videos, and my own writings. I want you to feel as involved as possible, so I will send out the links and information to the pages via email, a week or so before the trip's start date.
And finally, to sum it all up I am leaving you with a quote from one of the greatest and most influential leaders of all time. Nelson Mandela said this, "Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world". So I invite you to help change the world with me, by donating to this fundraiser and a making a lasting difference in the lives of the children and in the community of Sing Buri, Thailand.
