During the winter of 2015, I began volunteering for Chill Seattle. Snowboarding has been a pivotal part of my life for two decades, and this organization gives me the opportunity to use it to share with my community. Chill is an amazing organization that offers experiences to under-served youth that they might never otherwise have . It brings together people from a widely diverse social and economic backgrounds. It also provide volunteers like me with a way to interact with a larger community, and I believe we learn as much from the kids as they learn from us. During my early 20s, snowboarding was instrumental in providing me with structure, a relationship with the natural world, and a physical and mental outlet. It may have saved me from myself. Through it, I travelled, challenged myself in ways I'd never conceptualized, and gained a more positive world view. Additionally, it helped me to understand how privileged a certain group among the world population is...that skiing and snowboarding as a recreational activity or as a lifestyle are so readily available to some of us is a tremendous gift. I've known of Chill for nearly 20 years, but never lived in a location that allowed me to volunteer, so I jumped at the chance when I moved to Seattle. Please help me to raise money for this organization that does so much good for all of its participants, volunteers included. We've had to turn away a number of youth this year, as we have only two program nights available. It would be awesome to be able to expand Chill Seattle to as many youth as would like to participate.
