This campaign is raising funds for Kerrington's Heart, Inc., a 501(c)(3) organization that provides a wide variety of support to children affected by heart disease and their families.
Full Disclosure: I have known Heather Amos, the mother of Graydon Amos, for almost my entire life. We have been and always shall be, the best of friends. She is an incredible woman and a remarkable mother. Her son, Graydon, is a young man who possesses a strength that very few others will ever know.
Every year the Kerrington’s Heart, Inc. Board of Directors selects a child and their family to be the race ambassador for the Wild Hearts Fun Run. The race ambassador is a brave Congenital Heart Defect warrior, and their outstanding family, that embodies the true meaning of perseverance. Our race ambassador represents what the Wild Hearts Fun Run is all about, and the incredible people we strive to support.
This year our very deserving race ambassador is Graydon Amos, and the Amos family!
Graydon is a handsome, fun-loving and extroverted 6 year old boy with a contagious love for life. He has a rare genetic syndrome known as Chromosome 8 deletion. This particular deletion has only been officially diagnosed five times, with Graydon being both the only American and the only boy living today with this diagnosis. He has endured well over 20 surgical or exploratory procedures, including an open heart surgery.
One aspect of his genetic syndrome is Congenital Heart Defects. Graydon was born with an Atrial Septal Defect (ASD) and Ventricular Septal Defect (VSD). His open heart surgery corrected his VSD, however the ASD still persists. Once the VSD was closed, Graydon developed Pulmonary Hypertension. His ASD acts as a pop-off valve for the high pulmonary blood pressures, allowing blood to shunt between chambers.
The Amos family first came in contact with Kerrington’s Heart in 2010, after Graydon went through his open heart surgery. Graydon’s mom, Heather Amos, said, “I will never forget the gift basket/survival kit that included anything you could possibly need; a roll of quarters for the pop machine, journal, disposable camera, photo album, tooth brush/paste, and the list goes on. I just remember being touched by the genuine concern and compassion.”
In describing Graydon, his mother says, “When I think of Graydon, I think of bravery, I think of strength. It is truly amazing how much he loves life and how happy he makes others. Graydon is our miracle child and has been a blessing to so many people. We are by no means out of the woods yet, but we know that God’s plan is at work. We are blessed to have the support system that Kerrington’s Heart provides as well as the friendship and sense of family.”
