Dear all, I wanted to thank …
Dear all,
I wanted to thank all of you again for your strong support and for your generous contribution to the research against ALS. The NYC marathon team ALS raised altogether over $245,000 ! This placed this small team in the number 10 position of all charities raising funds for the 2015 marathon. This is a fantastic achievement. So thank you again very very much.
The marathon was last Sunday. It was a great sunny day in NYC, quite warm for the season, perfect for a nice race. Our team of 4 Frenchmen was super energized and excited, maybe a bit too much. We all started strong, trying to somewhat pace ourselves and enjoying along the way the fantastic atmosphere of New York City. The cheering crowds were just awesome and our red t-shirt (TEAM ALS – Running 4 a CURE) got a lot of attention and support.
After a few miles however, I started seeing that I had not been very good at managing my race and right when I entered Manhattan (at km 28 / miles 16) I felt the beginning of a cramp in my right upper leg. I decided to slow down, leaving my friends continue without me. It then required a ton of mental fight to not stop and walk. I was really down. That’s when I thought about all of you, that trusted me and supported me, these past 3 months during the preparation. I thought about Benj, who was kicking me for above. By km 32 or miles 20, I was feeling slightly better, the cramp was gone but I started feeling that my legs were very tired. And a good portion of the race remained and that included some slopes on 5th avenue and Central Park. So I decided to fight hard. I pushed your support in my head, dedicating a few hundred meters to each of you in turns, starting with my wife and kids (it helps to have 4 kids when you still have 10 km to run), with Benj and his family (with special attention to my beautiful god-daughter Mahaut) and all of you, friends and family who have supported me through that challenge.
And it worked! I was able to accelerate and by km 39 (mile 24), I managed to catch up with 2 of my friends and we did the last part altogether. We all finished under 4 hours, within a few seconds. This was a truly fantastic experience. And be sure that the support from all of you played a key role in that.
Thank you again very much,
Philippe
