Jess and Tyler Fire Relief
Organized by: Katie Rodgers
When I came home to spend a relaxing weekend with friends and family, I never could have imagined that it would include a devastating fire that would affect my best friend Katie, her sister Jess and her sister’s boyfriend, Tyler. Yesterday morning (Aug. 15th), I was woken up yesterday by Katie yelling that there was a fire at her Condo and that she had to get there. Jess and Tyler were renting Katie’s Condo at the time. As the day progressed, I learned that there had been a 3 alarm fire and though the condo was basically destroyed, everyone who lived in the Condo’s that were affected were ok, even the pets (Jess and Tyler’s 2 cats, and a neighbor’s dog in the other). It was hard to see the devastation on all three of their faces as the day continued, and even worse seeing the added stress when the news started reporting on the fire and sensationalizing the story based on things that were just simply overheard and not accurate. But, at the end of the day, I was so grateful that everyone was safe and ok. Katie and I met in 1996. We have gone through high school, college, post-college, pre-adulthood, and adulthood together. Katie has always been there for me, no matter what. She has gotten me through some tough times by listening to me, giving me advice and just plain keeping me inshape. She is probably the most generous person I know. She often would secretly pay for me to go to a movie with our friends when I didn’t have 10 dollars to spend. When I would borrow something of hers, more than likely she would would tell me to keep it. She has even just given me things that I needed just because she wanted to. These are just small examples of what she has done for me, and speaks highly of the kind of person she is. I met Jess when she was only 5 and I have seen her grow into the incredible human that she is today. Seeing her and Tyler together brings tears to my eyes. She loves him. He loves her. Watching them together last night, consoling each other and leaning on each other was quite touching. Katie lived in the condo for 3 ½ years, and Jess and Tyler were starting to build their life together there. They have been asked by so many people what they can do to help, and as humble as they all are, they have been gracious and thankful, but haven’t really been able to wrap their heads around what is needed. While Katie is insured, and most everything will be covered in the massive renovation needed, there are still things that will need to be covered in the upcoming months. Katie will still have to cover expenses dealing with the condo going forward, and Jess and Tyler have basically lost everything. Thankfully their family is very close, and Jess and Tyler do have a place to live and have been buying the necessities they will need. This is where you can help. I think being able to help them financially going forward will benefit everyone. Katie will be able to deal with the expenses and costs (outside of insurance) that will help rebuild the condo and Jess and Tyler will be able to start to pick up the pieces and keep moving forward. Anything will help, even if you can only donate five dollars. As I said before, they are so humble and grateful for the outpouring of support they have received thus far, and by adding the comfort that finances won’t be an issue, will be the best stress relief they could receive.
