I am running the NYC Marathon in November, my second marathon ever, in honor of Back on My Feet New York City (BoMF). The first marathon stopped me from running for the last 2+ years…
BoMF combats homelessness through the power of running on a micro-social level, by providing homeless men and women (members) emotional, economical, physical and physiological support, while also offering them educational, financial, and job placement assistance including real world trade, technology and/or social interaction training to empower them to re-join the workforce and ultimately get them get back on their feet!
A little about the not-for-profit organization which has been around for over a decade - after a 30 day commitment to running in the early morning (5:30am), their members (from various shelters) are provided the necessary resources with the goal of ultimately supporting them to get back on their feet as a successful member of society.
A little about the impact - Every dollar that you raise has more than a 2.5x return by having a life-changing, sustainable impact on our members who are working (and running) to break out of the cycle of homelessness.
My inspiration – I was inspired to get involved with BoMF and to run in their honor (as well as becoming an advisory board member and join one of the members’ groups every Monday morning in East Harlem), because I can empathize with not having a roof over your head. As a young child, I myself have lived in various shelters throughout the country and spent much of my childhood in foster care. This is one fact that most of you are unaware of, because I have been somewhat embarrassed to speak about it throughout my adult life. But I was one of the lucky ones, and now have a successful career and a wife that I love.
So I’m asking you to donate $25, $50, the cost of lunch or dinner out, or whatever amount you feel comfortable with. My goal is to raise a minimum of $5,000 before the end of September and personally get to know ten of our cities homeless men and women on a personal level with the hopes of empowering them to improve their lives.
Please consider this as an option for your companies matching program and if you do decide to have the amount matched, please note: Back on My Feet – New York City – Jesse Mitchell.
