Dear Family, Friends, and Colleagues,
I've pledged to run the 2013 New York City Marathon on November 3rd in support of the Dystonia Medical Research Foundation and I'm asking for your help.
You may not be familiar with this neurological movement disorder, I hadn't heard of it until seven years ago when my mother was first diagnosed. I was home for the holidays when her involuntary tremors had become noticeable to the point where the ensuing discussion was unavoidable: What was happening? Being the strong, intelligent, and resourceful woman that my mother is, she had already been seen by the best doctors in the country, and was able to educate our family on the condition.
A very complex, highly variable neurological movement disorder, Dystonia causes muscles to contract and spasm involuntarily. Opposing muscles often contract simultaneously as if they are 'competing' for control of a body part. The involuntary muscle contractions force the body into repetitive and often twisting movements as well as awkward, irregular postures. There are multiple forms of dystonia, and dozens of diseases and conditions may include dystonia as a symptom. Some forms are genetic but the cause for the majority of cases is not known; its the third most common movement disorder behind essential tremor and Parkinson’s disease; its a condition that knows no age, ethnic, or racial boundaries – and can affect young children to older adults of all races and ethnicities.
My mom is lucky, as her condition is mild and manageable by comparison to many. Through her experience, Ive learned much about Dystonia, and how debilitating it can be for those living with it. With my 26.2 mile run, id like not only to raise money for research, but also raise awareness for a disorder that many know little about, or perhaps have never known to exist.
Please consider a donation of any amount to help me reach my goal of $2500 by November 1st.
Thank you in advance for your time and generosity.
