THE STORY:

For my 35th birthday I would like to encourage everyone to make a contribution to Farmville Area Habitat for Humanity.  Since 1990, Farmville Area Habitat for Humanity has partnered with Southside Virginia working families, sponsors and communities to build 23 affordable quality homes and to provide support services that promote successful home purchase and ownership to individuals in Prince Edward, Buckingham, Charlotte, and Cumberland Counties.

Farmville Area Habitat for Humanity was very busy in 2012!  We are proud to have partnered with three wonderful families on new homes.

LeDora Hurt and family participated in the first Women Build sponsored by Lowe’s and Farmville Area Habitat for Humanity. The purpose of a Women Build is to empower women and to have at least half of the home build by women. How fitting since a family of women will be living in the home. The Hurt family home was dedicated on March 25.

Helen Robinson of Rice, VA became the second homeowner of 2012 through our partnership with the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) office of Rural Development. Helen and her family members worked alongside Green Construction to see the home become a reality. Helen’s home was dedicated on September 9th.

The third home of the year, dedicated on December 9th for DeVonda Robinson and her three sons (John, Joshua, and Jacob) is also a unique building partnership. DeVonda’s home is also known as the Apostle’s Build home. Area faith congregations have participated in fundraising for the home and spent many hours volunteering on site. The Apostle’s Build slogan of “Building on Faith” continues to inspire members of the community.

Affordable and decent housing helps families overcome barriers like substandard living conditions, overcrowding or accessibility. Without a decent place to live, people struggle to be productive members of society, children have more difficulties in school, and families cannot thrive.

Southside Virginia families deserve an equal chance for affordable homeownership and with your help Farmville Area Habitat for Humanity offers that opportunity.
