Jimmy Powell Transplant/Melanoma Medical Expense Fund
Organized by: Belinda Powell
Hello, my name is Belinda Powell and I am starting an online fundraiser for my husband, Jimmy Powell. Jimmy was diagnosed with Alpha-1 Antitypsin Deficiency in October of 2004. At the young age of 48, he was forced to stop working. Alpha 1 is a genetic disease that has life threatening affects on the lungs and the liver. Despite weekly infusions and other treatments, Jimmy continues to lose lung capacity and has been slowly deteriorating.
Although there was hope initially that just a liver transplant could cure his non-alcoholic liver cirrhosis and stabilize his lung disease, unfortunately, Jimmy's lungs were too far gone, and he would forever be on a ventilator. As a result of this diagnosis, it was determined that Jimmy needs a double lung/liver transplant, an operation so rare that it's been performed less than 100 times world-wide. After intense research, our journey led us to the Penn Transplant Institute, a facility that has performed five lung/liver transplants to date.
After traveling thousands of miles back and forth between Alabama and Philadelphia, and incurring large travel and hotel expenses, we said our goodbyes and moved to Philadelphia, where Jimmy had been listed for his combination lung/liver transplant. Jimmy and I stayed at The Gift of Life House for fifteen months, during which Jimmy tragically lost both of his parents. To make matters worse, in September 2015, Jimmy was diagnosed with a malignant melanoma on his nose. A thirteen hour surgery followed, removing the left side of his nose. We are currently staying at The Hope Lodge, a facility in Cheltenham, Pa, close to our transplant doctors as well as the dermatology team. The Malignant Melanoma is a bump in the road, but will NOT stop us from accomplishing our ultimate goal of the lung/liver transplant. It's been a 5 year journey and we aren't done yet!
As you can imagine, the costs involved in all of this are staggering. The medical/prescription costs are just part of it. Moving away from our home, lodging, food, transportation to ongoing medical appointments, etc, has created a financial burden that is impossible to imagine. Our ultimate goal is to have Jimmy healthy with a new lease on life. Please help us reach that goal by contributing to this worthy cause. No amount is too small or too large. Every dollar raised is greatly appreciated. Please share this with your friends and spread the word. Thank you in advance for your support and prayers.
