BENEFITING: DISABLED SPORTS USA
Hello friends, I am raising money in tribute to my friend, Jim Shaw. All funds raised will go to Disabled Sports USA so please check out their site. http://www.disabledsportsusa.org/. Jim was born with Spina Bifida and it is my understanding that throughout his life he battled many complications. While he had shared a few of his medical complications with our group of friends, he wasn't one to complain or be pitied. In fact, I’d say he was often the one to give encouragement and be strong for us. I've learned he fought all his life and didn't want people to know how sick he was. However, Jim was indeed sicker then I knew and it is my belief that he was still filled with hopes and dreams. He was a sports lover (no teams that I approve of but that’s okay); he not only liked to watch sports, but also participate in them. He had told me about some of the sports he had been in when younger, but the one we shared an interest in was racing. When I’d be down and out and struggling with my running he always had words of support. Jim had told me a few times he’d like to get back into racing, but Hand-cycles were very expensive. Amazingly enough, again Jim wrote to me on Facebook just a few weeks before his death about how he’d like to get a Hand-cycle. I say amazingly because I now know he was struggling with some illness at the time; however, he still had excitement about maybe one day getting back to what he loved. This got me thinking how many of us can just open our door and head out with very little effort or investment to participate in sports, yet we don’t. I started looking into the price of Hand-cycles and learned they cost between $1,500.00 and $12,000.00. Racing wheels alone can be $200- $600! That is when I decided I’d like to raise money in honor of Jim to help Disabled Sports USA. I think everyone should have an opportunity to try new sports and to fall in love with one. I will be running a race on April 6, 2013, in memory of Jim and will keep these words that he shared with me in my heart “Jen.... Can't say enough about how proud I am of you and what an accomplishment you've achieved! Think about it... do you know how few people in this world have accomplished completing a marathon?! It's an absolute bitch to go through but the glory is yours! Rest well, my friend!” I am hoping to raise money so that somewhere out there, someone else will get a chance to achieve their dreams, so that not few, but MANY, can accomplish their goals.
I thank his wife, Dawn, and son, Christopher, for allowing me the honor of running in Jim’s name.
I ask that you all consider making even a small donation to help others, strangers, fellow sports lovers. Maybe skipping your morning coffee can help someone follow their dreams.
My Sincere Thanks, Jennifer Gilliam
